Volleyball: Merrimack Outlasts Assumption

Junior outside hitter Stephanie Sheehan (Smithtown, N.Y.)tallied her 10th double-double of the season with 17 kills and 11 digs, to help lead the Merrimack College women’s volleyball team to a 3-1 victory over Northeast-10 Conference opponent Assumption College Tuesday night in Worcester, Mass.

How It Happened
Senior Jackie Jones (Amherst, N.H.) and freshman Jocelyn McLain (Fort Collins, Colo.)contributed 14 kills and 12 kills on the night, respectively. Rookie Tara Stuhr (Huntington Beach, Calif.) assisted 52 of the 60 kills for the Navy and Gold. Sophomore libero Madison Burke (San Jose, Calif.) chimed in with 29 digs, Jones and Sthur registered a team-high four blocks.
The Warriors took an early 7-3 lead over the Greyhounds before Assumption battled back to tie the set at 12-all. After three straight points from the Warriors, Merrimack took a 17-15 lead and extended the lead to five at 22-17. The Navy and Gold held together and took the first set, 25-21.
Assumption went ahead from the outset in the second set and led 8-5 early on. Assumption capped five straight points with another Johnston kill from the left side for a 13-5 lead before the Warriors ended that run. Merrimack took an eventual 23-22 lead on a kill from Jocelyn McClain, but the Hounds answered right back to tie the set at 23-23. A service ace from Assumption and an attack error on McLain gave the second set to the Hounds in a 25-23 final.
Merrimack held a 10-6 lead over the Greyhounds until Assumption went on a 4-0 run to bring the score within one point at 11-10. The Navy and Gold was slowly starting to pull away from Assumption and took the third set 25-15.
In the final set, Merrimack took a 11-6 lead before Assumption came back to tie the game at 12-all. With the the Warriors leading 17-16 midway through the set, the Greyhounds started to fall apart and Merrimack took the final set, 25-18.

- As a team, Merrimack finished the night with a .207 hitting percentage, while Assumption averaged .133 hitting percentage.
- Merrimack finished with 60 kills, 56 assists, 89 digs, and 10 blocks.
- Alie Carlson led the Greyhounds with 12 kills.
- Rookie Jennifer Cain (Melrose, Mass.) contributed 16 digs and two service aces.

What They Said
“I am very happy with the outcome of the game,” said head coach TJ Hajjar. “We came out strong in the first set and in our second set, Assumption just got lucky. We finished strong the next two sets and I saw a lot of good things on the court tonight.”
Merrimack volleyball returns to action this weekend when they return to Hammel Court to play host to the Yellow Jackets of American International Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
