Might as well just come out with it ….
My “position was eliminated” at The Eagle Tribune this morning. After six years there — the first of which I basically worked for free — my job was the victim of a company wide restructuring.
What’s next? I’m not sure.
First, I want to hear from you guys. You’re my readers. In fact, I’m sure most of you read me here and on Twitter and not in the E-T. Hopefully, this space can continue.
Once I know more, you’ll know more. There are a lot of moving parts right now, but I’m sure I’ll remain in the college hockey game, and hopefully, still covering Merrimack College for all you folks, who otherwise, will have no other resource for information.
Check back tonight. I hope to know more then.
Please keep up the Blog!! As a reader who has The Mack Report as their home page I would be lost without the information I get from you everyday. I am also a season ticket holder for the Warriors and even as I am sitting in the rink I have your Twitter feed up so that if there is a questionable call or some confusion in the stands I look to you for answers. Section 3 would not be the same without your input.
Mike…you and I go back a few years now…quite a few years actually. Even though I’m not in Lawrence anymore, I get online and read your articles on the weekend. I think you are an amazing, talented writer, and a huge asset to Merrimack College and the hockey program.
Do you have a person at the Trib that we can write to to let them know they are a bunch of idiots? I have no problem doing that for ya
Justin
Sorry to hear Mike…Print is getting hammered I know. I hope you keep up the website and the twitter updates that so many of us rely on. I’ve been there in another profession and what seems like a bad thing often leads to better opportunities. You are a great writer and a true friend to MC Hockey – Keep up the good work!
Sorry to hear that mike I hope you can find a better job and still cover Merrimack hockey. The information you give will be missed. Best of luck for your future. Sincerely Tim Burke
Mike
Sorry to hear you are one of the first casualities following the election.
Seriously, Your info is invaluable to all MC fans, both locally and those abroad. Hope you can keep it going, we are all here to support you-
Just keep on going. Something will develop for someone of your talent. You were the first one I followed on twitter and now I rely on it and you for everything. Please don’t give up Merrimack or your blog.
You have provided a great service to the school in terms of PR, maybe they will realize this and help you to carry on?
I’ve always appreciated and look foward your Blogs. It has kept me in touch with Merrimack Hockey. Your Blog reminds me of how grateful I am of the education I received at Merrimack. Consequently, I donate to the School every year. I’m confident someone will recognize your talents soon. I’ll keep looking for you on line.
Mike, you are as much of Merrimack Hockey as anyone! I wish you the best for tomorrow for you and yours. Give that little one you have a big hug, nothing better than that! Godspeed to you and thank you!!
sorry to hear the news mike… i’ve always loved reading your blog and articles. they’ve kept me in the loop in my years since leaving mc.
Hi Mike
I have, like many others, come to appreciate and rely on your opinions as they pertain to NCAA sports and for me, hockey. I want to wish you well on your way forward with your career. This small change happened for a reason and I believe good things will come of it for you. All the best to you.
Mike, I enjoyed reading all the stories and game recaps in the Mack Report. Many of my BSE fraternity brothers have been able to follow the Merrimack College hockey team by reading your blog. You are an outstanding writer and an A+ person. Your blog has been an invaluable marketing tool for Merrimack College hockey team. You are an asset to MC and your absence will be noticed.
Mike – As everybody has said,. sorry to hear the news and I wish you the best of luck. I check your blog throughout the week and I truely value the insight you provide. I hope you can keep this going and I hope you remain close to MC Hockey. I have every confidence that your future is bright.
Mike, at the very least I hope you keep this blog going. Ideally, I hope you find another job soon covering college hockey. Not only do you do a great job covering Merrimack, but you’re one of the best sources for news on Hockey East as a whole.
Good luck in your search.
As a fan, I truly enjoy all of the articles and the opinions – few people are able to cover their subjects with as much depth and candor as you do. I sincerely hope you keep the blog going – it’s required daily viewing and a great opportunity to connect with other fans. I highly doubt MC would be as popular as it is without your dedication to the school and to the program. Thank you for all time you’ve put in to make this blog a success, don’t stop now!
Mike,
I really appreciate the work you do for MC sports. As an alum living in AZ, I rely heavily on the info, live blogs, and podcasts/video. You’re work is on par with those so called experts on USCHO or College Hockey News. Hopefully someone recognizes your talent soon!
Mike.
Sorry to hear. I really will miss your blog. It was very informative, upbeat and neutral. From the great white north, best going forward.
Sorry to hear it, Mike. Hope you can find something and find a way to keep covering Merrimack.
Hi Mike,
I have been following Merrimack hockey since 1980. 25 years ago, the only way I could get a hockey score was calling my in-laws up in Quincy who would get a later addition Boston Globe. Boy have we come a long way from those days! Simple question; does Merrimack have a full time Director of Communications/PR? I value all you offer on the blog and too visit your site daily. Merrimack should do whatever it takes to keep your blog going!!
From an Alumnis, Fan and Sponsor
Mike,
Hard to believe that it has been 6 years that you were with the Tribune. Time seems to fly, but each and everyday I make sure to come to the blog. I truly hope you keep it going. As I mentioned last night on Twitter I wish you the best of luck moving forward. You deserve much more credit for what you do that what you receive on a day-to-day basis. My desire/commitment to the MC hockey program is always a result of YOUR hard work and dedication to keeping us fans informed. I look forward to seeing you sometime in the future, hopefully inside an arena.
This is really terrible news. I’m sorry for you and your family, Mike. I will echo the other comments here and say that I love this blog and greatly appreciate the work you do here for the MC fans and community. If there’s anything we collectively can do to help support this blog in some way to keep it coming, I would certainly be up for it. Good luck!
Hey Merrimack… how about hiring Mike to keep writing? This blog adds an immeasurable amount of value for MC fans.
Mike sorry to hear the news about your position at ET. I have viewed your blog for years and feel you have done an outstanding job for Merrimack’s hockey program and college hockey in general. Hope something breaks for you soon. Good luck
Mike-
What awful news. You know that I appreciate your articles in the Tribune and your coverage of Merrimack Hockey. The game of hockey in general and Merrimack Hockey in particular is better off for you being in it. I love the blog, especially on game nights and really hope you can keep it going. Maybe MC Hockey can help ? I hope we don’t lose you
Mike,
Sorry to hear this terrible news. I have come to rely on your blog for the latest and most accurate news about Merrimack hockey. Your articles provide keen insight to not only Merrimack hockey, but all of college hockey. This is just a bump in the road and I know you will land on your feet.
Mike, definitely echo what others have said. You do a great job, good luck on whatever you move on to. You should have plenty of material for a resume and portfolio that’s for sure.
Mr McMahon,
I am very sorry to hear about your job. I am new to Mack report and the blog, but, i do enjoy it. It should not be a burden for you and if you need to charge a subscription fee then you must. I like your articles about Merrimack and would be willing to pay. I hope you get another job soon. They say when door closes a window of opportunity usually opens..I hope so in your case. This is just a little bump in the road.
. I wish you all the best.. Thank you for your blogs, updates and articles.
Just read the news Mike, can’t believe it. You do such an awesome job, a class act for sure. I had the pleasure of meeting you finally last weekend, it was nice to put a face to your name. We really enjoy reading your articles, second to none. Keep up your expertise.
Good luck to you and your family.

Great reporters have lost their jobs, and will continue to lose them, as long as the public expects to read their news for free. Newspapers, guilty of enabling them for years, cannot reign in that horse that has galloped from the barn.
There’s a lot of good will here, son, a lot of sorrow at your layoff.
Wonder how many would pay to continue reading your blog? Or just move on to read it for free somewhere else …
Good luck. Paper cuts hurt like hell, but generally, we land on our feet.
