Rick Savastano Passes Away

Longtime Merrimack supporter and former public address announcer, Rick Savastano, passed away on Thursday evening after battling an illness.

Rick was a 1975 Merrimack graduate, and along with his brother John, were longtime supporters of the Merrimack program dating back to the J. Thom Lawler era. Rick and John were both honored by Hockey East in 2004, in recognition of the league’s 20th season, for their hard work and dedication to the Merrimack program as part of the league’s “20 Special Friends” series.

Rick was also awarded the J. Thom Lawler Memorial Award in 1989, which was given to a Merrimack alum for contributions to the game of hockey.

For years, John ran the music in the corner booth of J. Thom Lawler Arena while coordinating video; Rick was the public address announcer while also serving as timekeeper at home games.

Rick, an attorney, began his dedication to Merrimack hockey in the 1970’s, when he called games on the radio as a student.

Our deepest condolences to Rick’s family as they mourn his loss.
