Definitely a gutsy call taking Union to win the national title and I’m not sure that many of my colleagues will agree. But, here are some reasons:
First, I can’t say enough about how much I like the way Union defends. With a Lowell-Union national title game, I happened to pick the teams with the two best goals-against averages in their last 10 games, and that’s not a mistake. I firmly believe that defense wins championships.
Aside from that though, Union has been able to find more scoring. As hot as Lowell has has been down the stretch – the River Hawks are 9-1 in their last 10 and Union is 8-2 – the River Hawks are scoring less than three goals per game. If you look at how these 16 tournament teams have done in their last 10 games, Lowell has the third-worst scoring offense. Of the goals they have scored, more than 25 percent have come on the power play.
Union’s power play is slightly better (by 0.3%) but more importantly, the Dutchmen have been the better 5-on-5 team, scoring 17 percent of their goals up a man.
We’ll see what happens. The regionals kick off tomorrow and continue Saturday and Sunday.
