Merrimack Welcomes Class of 2017 to Campus
- Updated: June 27, 2012
Merrimack College welcomed its largest incoming class to campus during its annual summer orientation on June 24-27.
Over 700 of the newest Warriors joined their orientation leaders and other staff members in a two-day series of events that introduced them to life at Merrimack College. The incoming class represents the largest in the single-year history of the College, which has maintained its yearlong Momentum initiative toward new facilities and student housing with the long-term goal of increasing the student body.
At one point, the new students were brought to Hammel Court for a display from the Athletics Department. There, third-year women’s basketball head coach Monique LeBlanc served as emcee and helped portray all that encompasses being a Merrimack Warrior.
LeBlanc’s noted the importance of the relationships between new students and Merrimack Athletics, whether it was through playing, being a fan, or becoming involved in the athletic department. The segment also featured a video clip from Midnight Madness, Merrimack’s annual opening to its winter season, and a performance from the Club Sport of the Year, the Merrimack dance team.
In the Athletics Department alone, over 150 new student-athletes will be suiting up for the Navy and Gold this fall. They will look to match the unrivaled success from the previous academic year for the 22 returning varsity sports, while the women’s swimming and diving will also be making its debut in 2013-14.
Bolstered by the infusion of new faces on campus, the Warriors will look to build off of a memorable 2012-13 academic year. Highlighted by five different teams on campus laying claim to conference championships, as well as four that advanced to the NCAA Tournament, the Athletics Department enjoyed its best single-year overall winning percentage in over five years, while several other teams – including the women’s basketball team and the baseball team – embarked on magical playoff runs that captivated the campus during their respective postseasons.
The 2013-14 Merrimack Athletics calendar opens on Sept. 5, 2013, when the men’s soccer team hosts Dominican at Martone-Mejail Field at 7 p.m. to open up the 2013 Warrior Kick-Off Classic. All fall sport schedules will be made available online in the coming weeks at www.MerrimackAthletics.com
