Hockey East will not adopt the optional 4-on-4 overtime format the NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel recently approved at individual conference’s discretion.
The 5-on-5 format, which will remain in Hockey East, is considered the default format by the NCAA. However, individual conferences — or non-conference games where the teams mutually agree — can use the 4-on-4 format.
The oversight panel acknowledged that the 4-on-4 format is the default for the National Hockey League, however, it said that the NCAA hockey community had not reached a consensus on the best approach.
I’m glad to hear it. College teams are built differently. Going to 4 on 4 would be an advantage to the teams built on speed. The speed differences are not as pronounced in the NHL.
