Jon Gillies decommits from Northeastern

Indiana Ice (USHL) goaltender Jon Gillies has decommitted to Northeastern, according to Nathan Fournier of the Maine Hockey Journal. According to the report, Gillies asked out of his NLI after it was revealed that Chris Rawlings would return for his senior season; he signed his NLI release on Wednesday morning.

“The (Northeastern) coaching staff had a really good relationship with my family and I,” Gillies told Fournier. “When Chris Rawlings decided to return for his senior year, that’s not what we planned on as a group. So the circumstances have changed and Mr.  Madigan was amazing throughout the whole process.”

“He wasn’t glad he was releasing me, but he was releasing me without any questions if I felt I had to pursue other options for next year. It was a mutual agreement based on changed circumstances.”

The Quebec Remparts own Gillies’ CHL rights, and he told Fournier he’s 50-50 between another college or the Major Junior route. He’s rated as one of the top goaltenders in this year’s NHL Entry Draft according to the NHL’s Central Scouting.

He could always come to Merrimack 🙂 hehehe As much as I’d love to see this (I’ve heard a LOT about this kid’s talent), I just don’t see it happening…I think he goes the Major route.

I think if playing time this year is his concern, he wouldn’t be coming here, I’d have to assume he’d be 3rd or 4th on the depth chart in Andover.

He’s expected to be a mid round draft choice this year. He would at worst be the 2nd string goalie at Merrimack next year. Kid wants to start right away though, not sit for a year or two. When you ask for a release from a NLI it’s because you’re going to another school as opposed to MJ.

He’s keeping his options open. Wouldn’t be surprised to see him go the MJ route. He’s 50-50 on MJ or other NCAA team.
